2026 Midterm Elections map

What each side warns about

Beyond the policy debate, both parties tell voters the other side has a long-term plan to lock in power. Here are the biggest of those claims, each with who said it and a source, and what the record shows where it is relevant. Listing a claim is not an endorsement.

What Democrats say about Republicans

  • Presidential power

    A second Trump term would carry out Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation's 900-page plan to expand presidential power and reshape the federal government.

    What the record shows: During the campaign Trump said he had "nothing to do with Project 2025." In office he named its co-author Russ Vought budget director and rolled out many policies it proposed, including steps to dismantle the Education Department, restructure the federal workforce and freeze some domestic funding.   • Democracy

    Asked whether Trump is a fascist, she said he is, and that he is unfit to serve.

    What the record shows: Democrats point to Trump telling Christian voters in July 2024 that "you won't have to vote anymore" (his campaign said he meant unity), and to his March 2025 remark that he is "not joking" about a third term, which the 22nd Amendment forbids.   • Redistricting

    Trump's push for Texas to redraw its map mid-decade was a scheme to rig the 2026 midterms and keep the House.

    What the record shows: Trump publicly asked Texas for five more Republican seats, and Texas Republicans passed a new map in 2025. Redrawing mid-decade is legal in most states. California Democrats answered with Prop 50, aimed at five Democratic seats, so both parties have drawn partisan maps for 2026. Wikipedia: 2025 California Proposition 50

  • Social Security

    Trump intends to cut Social Security.

    What the record shows: Trump has pledged that "not a single penny" will be cut from Social Security. In March 2024 he talked about "cutting" entitlements and quickly walked it back, and his first-term budgets proposed cuts only to disability and SSI programs, which Congress did not pass.   • Who runs elections

    Trump is trying to take control of how states run elections, which the Constitution leaves to the states.

    What the record shows: The order required documents proving citizenship to register for federal elections and told states to count only mail ballots that arrive by Election Day, tying federal grants to that deadline. Federal judges blocked key parts of it in 2025. The White House says the order protects the integrity of elections. AP via ABC7

What Republicans say about Democrats

  • Democracy

    If Democrats won, the 2024 election would be the last real one, because they would take away free speech, gun rights and the right to vote effectively.

    What the record shows: Republicans won the 2024 election, so the prediction was not tested. Elections have continued on schedule since, including the November 2025 state elections and the 2026 midterms. Wikipedia: 2025 California Proposition 50

  • Immigration and voting

    Democrats let large numbers of migrants into the country on purpose, to turn them into voters and keep power for good.

    What the record shows: Only citizens may vote in federal elections, and noncitizen voting is a crime. Immigrants usually hold a green card for about five years before they can become citizens, and those who entered illegally face higher hurdles. Georgia's Republican secretary of state audited 8.2 million registered voters in 2024 and found 20 noncitizens. The Biden administration removed, returned or expelled more than 4.5 million people from 2021 to 2024. PolitiFact rated the claim False (2024) and Pants on Fire (2025).   • Courts and the Senate

    Democrats would end the Senate filibuster, add seats to the Supreme Court and make D.C. and Puerto Rico states, so they could dominate politics for decades.

    What the record shows: These are real proposals that some Democrats support. The Democratic House passed D.C. statehood bills in 2020 and 2021, and a 2021 bill from some Democrats would have expanded the Court to 13 justices; neither became law. Statehood would likely add four Senate seats that lean Democratic. Any of these steps needs Congress and the President.   • Election integrity

    Democrats rigged the 2020 presidential election through voter fraud.

    What the record shows: Trump's own Attorney General, William Barr, said in December 2020 that the Justice Department had found no fraud on a scale that could have changed the outcome. AP via KSL

  • Redistricting

    California's Proposition 50, which redrew the state's House map to favor Democrats, was an unconstitutional scam and the vote was rigged.

    What the record shows: Prop 50 is a partisan redraw: California Democrats wrote it in direct response to Texas Republicans redrawing their map, and voters approved it in November 2025. No evidence of a rigged vote was offered; officials reported only a small number of isolated ballot problems. Wikipedia: 2025 California Proposition 50
