What's at stake: Senate control
For the country
- Senators vote on every federal law, confirm Supreme Court justices, federal judges and cabinet members, and ratify treaties. Terms last six years.
- Republicans hold 53 seats. Democrats need a net gain of 4 seats for a 51-seat majority, because the Vice President breaks ties for Republicans.
- If Democrats win the Senate, the President's judicial and cabinet nominees would need Democratic votes, and the President's bills could be blocked.
- If Republicans keep the Senate, the President can keep confirming judges and nominees and has a partner for legislation.
- Midterms are usually read as a verdict on the sitting president, and the president's party has lost House seats in most midterms since World War II.
If Democrats win
- Supporters say a Democratic senator would push to lower health-care costs and protect the Affordable Care Act.
- They argue for restoring federal abortion protections and expanding voting access.
- They favour raising taxes on the highest earners and corporations to fund programs.
If Republicans win
- Supporters say a Republican senator would keep taxes low and protect recent tax cuts.
- They argue for tighter border security and stricter immigration enforcement.
- They favour expanding domestic energy production and cutting federal regulation.
Arguments are summarised at party level from each side's stated priorities, not quotes from the candidates.
